Gerhard Binder (born August 29, 1937 in Nuremberg ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Gerhard Binder studied Classical Philology in Erlangen , where he wrote his dissertation in 1964, The Suspension of the King's Child. Cyrus and Romulus received his doctorate. He achieved his habilitation in 1968 in Cologne , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1970 and scientific councilor and professor in 1971. In 1982 he moved to the Ruhr University Bochum , where he worked as a professor for Latin studies until his retirement .

Binder's research focuses on the history of culture, religion and influence in antiquity as well as Roman literature, especially that of the Augustan period. In 1996, together with Bernd Effe , he founded the series Bochum Ancient Studies Colloquium (BAC), in which both anthologies and monographs appear. Binder also wrote numerous articles for the Neue Pauly (DNP), whose department of cultural history he was co-editor.
