Peter Steinmetz

Peter Steinmetz (born March 2, 1925 in Illingen (Saar) ; † December 12, 2001 in Saarbrücken ) was a German classical philologist and from 1968 to 1990 professor of classical philology at the University of Saarland .

Life

After studying in Mainz and teaching at the State Ludwigsgymnasium Saarbrücken , he received his doctorate in 1957 under Rudolf Stark with the work The Purpose of Theophrast's Characters . In 1961 he moved to the University of the Saarland, where he joined in 1964 with the work of The Physics of Theophrastus habilitation , and taught there until 1990th

The main focus of his academic work was research on Roman literature of the 2nd century AD (1981) and on Stoic philosophy (1994). In his individual publications he deals with topics ranging from early Greek philosophy to patrology . He was the editor of the Palingenesia series .

The astrophysicist Matthias Steinmetz (* 1966) is his son.
