Jerzy Axer (born April 18, 1946 in Łódź ) is a Polish literary historian and classical philologist . He is the son of theater director Erwin Axer .

Life

Axer spent his childhood in Warsaw , where he attended high school . After graduating from high school in 1964, he studied classical philology at the University of Warsaw , where he obtained his master's degree in 1969 . From 1970 he then worked at the Institute for Classical Philology there. In 1972 he received his doctorate with the thesis Jerzy z Tyczyna, humanista i dyplomata and completed his habilitation in 1976 with Mowa Cycerona w obronie komediowego Roscjusza. Study z krytyki tekstu . From 1978 he lectured at the Warsaw State Theater School. In 1981 he became a member of the Komitet Nauk o Kulturze Antycznej at the Polish Academy of Sciences . In addition, from 1981 to 1987 he was Vice Dean and then Dean of the Department of Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw. In 1983 he became a member of the International Society of the History of Rhetoric. In 1986 he became an associate professor and lectured at several foreign universities. In 1991 he became Vice Director of the Institute for Classical Philology at the University of Warsaw and at the same time director of the newly created Center for the Study of Ancient Traditions in Poland and Central Eastern Europe. In 1992 he became a full professor and member of the Wolfenbüttel working group for Renaissance research. In 2003 he received an honorary doctorate from the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv .

He lives in Warsaw .
