Burkhart Cardauns

Burkhart Cardauns (born July 18, 1932 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Burkhart Cardauns studied classical philology at the universities of Cologne and Munich . In 1958 he received his doctorate in Cologne with the dissertation Varros Logistoricus on the worship of gods (Curio de cultu deorum) , which appeared in 1960. He achieved his habilitation in 1967 at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg with the font M. Terentius Varro, Antiquitates rerum divinarum. Edition of the fragments and commentary . When the Faculty of Classical Philology was founded at the University of Mannheim in 1969, he was appointed Scientific Councilor there. In 1971 he was appointed adjunct professor.

Cardauns became a full professor and holder of the chair for Classical Philology II at the University of Mannheim in 1974. In February 2001 he retired .

Cardauns is one of the leading experts on the Roman polymath Marcus Terentius Varro . He has written several text editions and commentaries on various Varro's writings and is a member of the Centro di Studi Varroniani. He is also an expert at the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .
