Medicinal Plant of the Year

The Medicinal Plant of the Year has been proclaimed annually since 1999 by the interdisciplinary study group Development History of Medicinal Plant Science at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Würzburg . Well-known scientists who belong to this body or who belonged to a. Franz-Christian Czygan (initiator), Johannes Gottfried Mayer and Bernhard Uehleke . In 2012, a plant was chosen together with the WWF . For 2020, the German Medical History Museum (Ingolstadt), the German Pharmacy Museum (Heidelberg) and the Chair for Aroma and Smell Research established in 2018 at the University of Erlangen participated for the first time .

As early as 1987 to 1989, the Association of German Druggists (VDD) proclaimed a medicinal plant of the year.

The selection of the Medicinal Plant of the Year is intended to emphasize the importance of plants in medicine and their pharmaceutical use.
