Midlum in Rheiderland is a small town in the municipality of Jemgum in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony .

history

The terp village was built around the time of Christ's birth on the Ems . The oldest building is the Protestant church from 1200 with a medieval hagioscope , a so-called leprosy fissure. The Midlum Church houses an old organ by Hinrich Just Müller . Next to the church is the oldest bell tower in East Frisia from the 13th century. The free-standing “tower” of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Midlum is 14.0 m high and, with an angle of inclination of 6.74 degrees, is more inclined than the Leaning Tower of Pisa (3.97 degrees). However, according to the current definition, the building is not considered a tower in the narrower sense, as its height is not a multiple of its diameter . Therefore as "schiefster tower in the world" is in the Guinness Book Records of the Leaning Tower of Suurhusen listed.

Midlum has been part of the Jemgum parish since January 1, 1973 . With its 295 inhabitants and an area of 7.42 square kilometers, Midlum is the third largest of the eleven Jemgum districts.

Brickworks

Old brick factory on the Ems in Midlum

Like the entire Rheiderland, Midlum was an important location for brick production due to its high clay deposits until the beginning of the 1970s . Located directly on the Ems, two tall chimneys in Midlum testify to the former boom of this branch of industry. One of these brickworks was partially restored and can now be visited as a brickwork museum.
