The Bansmeer is an approximately 24 hectare large and shallowly diked, largely natural lake in the area of the seaport town of Emden . It is located about 4 km east of the built-up urban area.

The lake is located in the Moormarsch on the Geestrand of the East Frisian Geest on the A 31 motorway . The Bansmeer is approx. 1 meter deep, but has a place with a depth of up to 17 meters and corresponding sharp edges due to earlier sand extraction. Since 1975 the Bansmeer and its surroundings in the districts of Riepster Hammrich , Riepe , Petkum and Uphusen with a total size of about 48 hectares have been designated as a nature reserve.
Flora and fauna
The Bansmeer is one of the wetlands of international importance and represents a valuable habitat for endangered animal and plant species and communities: On the west and south-west side there is a wide silting zone with reeds , which are in front of the water with narrow-leaved cattails and rushes . The area is breeding and habitat of numerous swamps and water birds, including harrier and Teichrohrsänger , also resting and hibernation place for Nordic migratory birds , especially ducks , rag / loons and Sawyer .
It is not allowed to enter the Bansmeer with boats. For the proper practice of fishing outside the reed belt, rowing boats owned by those authorized to fish are exempt from this ban. The lake is owned by the district fishing association for Ostfriesland e. V. used. It is not permitted to fish the lake from the shore.
