The Loppersumer Meer is located northeast of the eponymous place Loppersum in East Friesland . It is a shallow still water with 13 hectares of open water and reed siltation zones, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Great Sea in the middle of the East Frisian moorland. It is surrounded by fields and grassland areas ( wet meadows ). The entire area with approximately 53.5 hectares has been a nature reserve since 1988 .
The "sea" (as the inland lakes are called in East Friesland) is surrounded by pronounced reed / reed beds , although not all zones are directly connected to the water surface of the sea (on the west bank a so-called "deep" runs between the reed bed and the water body, so a wide ditch).
It is especially important area for birds such as reed bunting , marsh harriers , bearded tits , grebes , reed warbler , sedge warbler and many duck species .
