The Sandwater near Simonswolde ( Ihlow municipality ) in the Aurich district is a shallow fen lake on the Geestrand and is one of the few remaining natural "inland seas" in East Frisia .
description
The still waters probably formed for the first time in the warm period of the Atlantic around 5000 years ago, then temporarily disappeared after a land uplift and climate change, only to reappear around 2000 years ago.
The Sandwater and some surrounding wetlands have been designated as a nature reserve since 1973 with a total size of 59 hectares . The extensive reed beds have an important function as nesting and feeding space for reed breeders and water birds . This expanding reed but also causes a gradual silting and thus reducing the open water surface - these are still about 22 ha currently here also large floating carpets of shape. Lake and water lilies, the aspect that also accelerate the Silting and sedimentation process. Since the lake was dyed in the early 1960s and surface drainage in the area, the original hydrology and trophy of the water have been severely impaired. Previously, the Sandwater was characterized by a particularly rich underwater flora, only moderately nutrient-rich, clean waters, for example by many currently rare species of spawning herbs and the occurrence of frogweed ( Luronium natans ) and hedgehog ( Baldellia ranunculoides ). Today you can still see frog bites , water feathers , swan flowers and arrowheads .
In winter, the shallow lake can freeze over relatively quickly at the right temperatures and is then often used as an ice rink.
