The Herrenmoor is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Zetel in the district of Friesland and in the town of Westerstede in the district of Ammerland . It went up in a larger nature reserve in 2016.

History and description

The nature reserve with the NSG WE 178 label was 147  hectares , of which 97 hectares were in the Friesland district and 50 hectares in the Ammerland district. It formed the main part of the FFH area Lengener Meer, Stapeler Moor, Baasensmeer Moor . To the northwest and west of the Herrenmoor nature reserve were the nature reserves Spolsener Moor , Stapeler Moor as well as Stapeler Moor Süd and Kleines Bullenmeer . The area was protected since December 13, 1986. On September 1, 2016, it became part of the newly designated nature reserve Stapeler Moor and the surrounding area . Responsible lower nature conservation authorities were the district of Friesland and the district of Ammerland.

The former nature reserve, north of Westerstede and southwest of Neuenburg and Zetel, protects a raised moor area as part of the East Frisian central moors that used to extend over large areas. In the peripheral areas, areas have been cultivated as grassland that is used extensively for agriculture.

The moor is drained via ditches and banks to the Aper Tief and further over Jümme and Leda to the Ems or to the Ellenserdammer Tief, which flows into the Jade Bay as Dangaster Tief .
