The nature reserve is located south of the town of Neustadtgödens, which belongs to the municipality of Sande . It places a sand extraction point under protection, which was created during the construction of the A 29 between 1978 and 1981. During this time, 5 million cubic meters of sand were extracted, creating groundwater-fed lakes. Part of the site was recultivated after the sand mining had ended . In the process, non-local trees such as poplars were first brought in. This was later removed again in the course of maintenance measures. Furthermore, the woody trees in the nature reserve are placed on the cane as part of maintenance measures with the aim of maintaining a hedge-like woody stock that does not shade or push back the reed edges too much and at the same time achieve a shading effect on the surrounding areas.

The three chambers of the former sand extraction point are connected by overflows, which regulate the water level of the lakes. The third lake in the northeast of the nature reserve drains to the Neustädter Tief.

The nature reserve is the habitat of various water birds and also serves as a resting area for numerous duck birds . Grebes , shelduck , mallard , tufted duck and coot , and various songbirds , including reed bunting , reed , pond and marsh warbler nest here too.

The pond bat is also native here. In addition to the protection of the biotope, which should be able to develop undisturbed in the long term, the scientific importance for the observation and research of natural succession was also the purpose of the protection.

In the west of the nature reserve, which is supervised by the Scientific Working Group for Nature and Environmental Protection, there is a viewing platform from which two of the lakes can be seen.
