Upjever and Dose swamp moor are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Schortens in the district of Friesland and the municipality of Friedeburg in the district of Wittmund .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 306 is approximately 116  hectares . The largest part of the nature reserve, around 84 hectares, is located in the district of Friesland, around 32 hectares are in the district of Wittmund. The nature reserve is identical to the FFH area of the same name . In the south it borders on the landscape protection area " pond bat waters ". The " Sumpfmoor Dose " nature reserve, which was designated in 1984, has been completely incorporated into this nature reserve. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Friesland and Wittmund.

The nature reserve, which consists of two areas, is located southwest of Schortens. It places part of the Upjever forest and the Dose marsh under protection.

Forest Upjever

The Upjever Forest ( ) is a forest area in the area of ​​the nature reserve in parts of historically old forest locations. Here grove beech forest , pedunculate oak forest and oak-hornbeam forest , and in small areas also woodruff beech forest. Common beech and English oak are the dominant tree species. In the beech forests in the form of the hornbeam-beech forest there are mainly rowan , holly and buckthorn with pill sedge , willow and many-flowered white root in the herb layer, as well as in the beech forests in the form of woodruff-beech forest mainly ash , hornbeam and bird cherry with woodruff , golden nettle , Wood anemones , forest ragweed and single-flowered pearl grass in the herb layer. In the oak-hornbeam forests, besides common oak, especially hornbeam, white elm , bird cherry, hazel and common hawthorn grow .

The area can be experienced via forest roads.

Marsh bog can

The swamp moor Dose ( ) is a partially peated high moor . It is largely occupied by bog forest and swamp bushes, which are predominantly formed by bog birch and ash willow and buckthorn bushes. At margins close to fen damp locations extensively used, grassland area of. Abandoned peat cuttings and depressions have been upgraded through rewetting measures.

Due to the Emder Tief, which runs along the edge of the nature reserve, the grassland areas are also important as hunting habitats for bats such as bats . B. the pond bat .

The moor drains to the Emden Tief, which borders the nature reserve in the south or flows a short distance through it, and to the Upjeverschen Tief.

The forests in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old and dead wood .
