The East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest is a natural spatial main unit group (not entirely synonymous with the Greater Region of the Third Order ) in northwest Germany, namely in northwest Lower Saxony . Its peculiarity consists in the varied juxtaposition of different landscape elements of the North German lowlands , the natural spatial unity of the first order to which the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest belongs.

Location and limits

The main unit group lies in the area of the East Frisian districts Aurich , Leer and Wittmund , the Oldenburg districts Friesland , Ammerland , Oldenburg and Cloppenburg , the city of Oldenburg and finally the district Emsland .

Natural structure

The name Ostfriesen-Oldenburgische Geest comes from the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany and its follow-up publications, which were mainly published in the 1950s and 1960s. The name is generally unknown, but the unit is still used by the BfN to this day.

The main unit group is divided into main units (three-digit) as follows

Adjacent main unit groups are the Ems-Weser-Marsch (D25) in the north and the Ems-Hunte-Geest (the northern part of the D30 unit, the southern part of which is the Dümmer- Geest lowland) in the south .

In the far south-east, a small section of the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest is part of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park .

Natural features

The East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest is a largely flat lowland that only shows a clear gradient to the east, towards the Wesermarsch . There are no larger surveys in the area of the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest. At Dangast, the Geest extends right to the edge of the Jadebusen , a bay in the North Sea , otherwise there is a strip of marshland between the Geest and the sea or the Unterems and the Unterweser , which is several kilometers wide.

The surface water flows from the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest to a large extent over smaller tributaries of the Ems and Weser towards the North Sea. The climate is atlantic .
