Location of the municipality of Rhauderfehn in the district of Leer

Klostermoor has been part of the East Frisian community of Rhauderfehn since the administrative and territorial reform of January 1, 1973 . With an area of 24.77 square kilometers, it is the largest in area in the municipality. The row and scattered settlement is a good six kilometers east of Papenburg in the center of an area of upland moor.

history

During the Middle Ages, the area of the current district was owned by the Johanniterkommende Langholt , who wanted to make the area arable on their own. However, this plan failed. The reason for this was the inadequate development of the wide bog areas. The construction of the nearby Rhauderfehn also hindered the development of the state in the area of the Klostermoors. This only changed when Westrhauderfehn grew to the edge of the Klostermoor in the 19th century. Then the slow settlement of the area began. This was initially limited to the border areas to Westrhauderfehn, where infrastructural approaches existed. In 1897 the settlement was officially recorded under its current name for the first time. Klostermoor received a major boost in its development after the Emsland Plan was passed on May 5, 1950. As a result, "in the once desolate expanse of the Klostermoor numerous full-time farmers and, at the beginning of the 1960s, a self-contained housing estate with a school and kindergarten." That had a big impact on the population. In 1945 almost 400 people lived in Klostermoor. By 1973 this number almost tripled to 1,162 inhabitants. As a result of the further development of residential areas, Klostermoor now has 1,335 residents.
