|
Schatteburg was incorporated into the new municipality of Rhauderfehn on January 1, 1973 on the occasion of the administrative and territorial reform . With around 90 inhabitants, it is the smallest district in the municipality. The scattered settlement, which consists of small groups of courtyards and houses, is located about eight kilometers southeast of the district town of Leer in East Friesland . The 6.01 square kilometer district was founded on Gley Podzol soil.
The place was first mentioned in 1484 as Scarteborch . The current spelling has been in use since 1719. The name of the place goes back to the Schatteburg built in the Middle Ages. Their designation is derived from the nickname Sc (h) arte , which is also included in the family name of Focko Schartinghe , who lived in the area in the 15th century . This castle was probably a stone house , which was probably built in the 15th century on the Karkweg leading to Backemoor .
