Backemoor is a district of the municipality of Rhauderfehn in the district of Leer in East Frisia .

history

Backemoor is an old Geestdorf . It was first mentioned in a document in 1409 as Bakemoore . Around 1436 it was called Boecmora .

The church of St. Laurentius and St. Vincenz was built towards the end of the 13th century. In the 16th century it was expanded as a fortified church , as indicated by the western tower from the same century with its loopholes. The church is said to have been surrounded by ramparts and moats in the past.

A castle is said to have once stood south of the church, and Albert von Bakemoor is said to have built it. Around 1534 he was the castle commander of the ancestral castle of the Cirksenas in Greetsiel .

On January 1, 1973 Backemoor was incorporated into the new municipality of Rhauderfehn.

Religions

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Backemoor was merged with the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Sebastian and Vincenz in Westoverledingen to form the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Vincenz in Rhauderfehn on June 1, 2012.
