Collinghorst ( Low German Cöllnöst, "Cnöst", Huntjedbody ) is the third largest district of the East Frisian community Rhauderfehn in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony with around 2500 inhabitants . The federal road 438 runs through the village from Ihrhove to Rhauderfehn.

history

According to Houtrouw , the name of the place comes from the Kolden or Kollen, the pagan priests of the Frisians who had their sanctuary in this place. More likely, however, is a combination of the nickname Koll with the collective suffix -ing and the term Horst , which stands for a bushy hill. Another possible explanation of the place name is a derivation of the family name Kolling . The place is first mentioned possibly in the 10th century as Udhurstun . This designation is interpreted as a combination of the old Low German dative plural of hurst with the adverb ūt (= from). In Udhurstun therefore means (for the) outside forests . Later names were to Kollingehorst in 1409 and Kollinghorst in 1438. Today's spelling has been in use since 1599.

The late Romanesque church is said to be the oldest in Overledingerland . Loopholes and chimneys characterize it as a defensive tower. In 1959 it was renewed.

In 1409 the place was taken by the chief Keno tom Brok and his ally Focko Ukena . The stone house or the old castle was a simple fortified tower that came into the possession of the von Hövel family in the 17th century . They are the descendants of Heinrich von Hövel , who, as Komtur (office) of the Order of St. John in Burgsteinfurt, negotiated with the East Frisian Count about the whereabouts of the Order's possessions in East Frisia after the Reformation . Later the castle came into the possession of the von Hövelschen descendants from the Roskam family and an economic section in the style of an East Frisian Gulf house was added. The historic building was destroyed in 1945 by the effects of the war and later demolished. It was located on the property of what would later become the Grünefeld nursery on Hauptstrasse.

The settlements of Grete, Glansdorf and Königskiel emerged in the area of Collinghorst in the 17th and 18th centuries. There was also the so-called “Wispelingsboom” in Collinghorst. It was a very old linden tree in the center of the village, which probably marked a medieval thing site .

On January 1, 1973, Collinghorst was incorporated into the new municipality of Rhauderfehn.
