The Oldenburger Geest is divided into the following natural subunits:

The Oldenburger Geest is bounded in the west by the natural spatial unity of the East Frisian Central Moors and the Emsmarschen , in the north by the East Frisian Geest , in the east by the Wesermarschen and in the south by the Hunte-Leda Moorniederung .

location

The Oldenburger Geest essentially extends over the district of Ammerland and the city of Oldenburg . It lies on a flat arched geest plate and is almost completely surrounded by moorland and low-lying marshland like an island . Only in the north is there a direct connection to the East Frisian Geest .

Spatial structure

Numerous streams running almost parallel to each other, some of which have wide valleys, divide the geest plate into a system of elongated ridges that extend in a north-east-south-west direction. The ridges protrude only about three meters above the lowlands, only in some places beyond it, such as B. the Tilly hill or the transition to the march of the lower Hunte and the Wesermarsch .

The landscape impression is shaped by old wood, the Zwischenahner Meer , but above all by grassland, which is characterized by many structured elements such as flowing waters, hedgerows and deciduous forest areas . The Zwischenahner Meer is a now eutrophicated brown water lake with partially still existing typical siltation zones . The lake was created by a sinkhole when a salt dome collapsed . In the north of the landscape lies the wide, trough-shaped lowland area of the Wapel , which is filled with raised, transitional and fens. In addition to grasslands, there are occasional moor birch forests and heather areas.

use

The Geestrücke are divided by small pieces of forest, which were afforested on inferior soils after the division of the common land as part of the agricultural reforms. They are used as grassland fields and - a special feature especially in the Ammerland - as an area for tree nurseries . The higher lying areas are used for arable farming.

natural reserve

The Jührden Moor is significant in terms of nature conservation . The Zwischenahner Meer is of particular importance as a resting and retreat area for water birds.

Alternative meaning of the term

During the time of the independence of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the Free State of Oldenburg , the term Oldenburger Geest was also used to denote the central part of the country, which included the current district of Oldenburg in the term. The offices of Oldenburg , Westerstede, Varel, Wildeshausen and Delmenhorst were included in the Oldenburger Geest . The Oldenburger Geest is followed by the Marsch area in the north and the Münsterland Geest in the south .
