Grabstede is a district of the municipality Bockhorn in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony . The village, which has around 1000 inhabitants, is located on a ridge and borders on the Bockhorner Moor nature reserve and the Neuchâtel jungle .

Origin of name

The name "Grabstede" is derived from the earlier "grave site", which stands for the clay mining that took place in the local area at that time .

history

For the monastery in Bredehorn , monastery courtyards were founded in the vicinity , including the Grabhorn monastery courtyard , which can still be found in Grabstede today. The name of this since 1565 demonstrable court derives from Grape ( manure , liquid manure from (a curved, elongated hall)) and Horna. This name describes the dense population of cattle in the area.

Grabstede emerged as a settlement for workers and their families. At the end of the 19th century the village was connected to the Ellenserdamm – Ocholt railway . However, this connection can no longer be found today, just like the windmill that was demolished in 1919 . The Grabstede volunteer fire brigade has been providing fire protection and general help in the area since 1921 .

societies

There are several clubs in the village, including the volunteer fire brigade, a shooting club, a show band and various sports clubs in the village.
