Neuchâtel Castle

Neuchâtel Castle is a castle in Neuchâtel , a district of the municipality of Zetel in the Lower Saxony district of Friesland .

In 1462, Count Gerd zu Oldenburg had the Neuchâtel Castle ( Nige Borg ) built as a fortress against the East Frisians as a counterweight to the East Frisian Friedeburg . At the laying of the foundation stone he is said to have shouted : “Dat de Fresen de Bammel slae!” (“The Frisians should be afraid!”)

Around 1640, Matthäus Merian made an engraving of Neuchâtel Castle with the title "Nieuburg oldenburgisch". It shows the bastioned , castle-like palace complex with a moat .

Towards the end of the 16th century, the complex was converted into a representative residential palace. After Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg's death in 1667, the castle served his wife as a residence and widow's seat. After a renovation at the end of the 17th century, the famous Oldenburg horses were bred at the castle in its own stud . Later was upstairs apartment of the bailiff in which, among other things, the poet Friedrich Leopold Graf zu Stolberg lived as a bailiff in his capacity. The castle has housed the following institutions since 1700:

  • 1700–1858: Regional Court (Drosteigericht)
  • 1856: Agriculture school
  • 1879: Agricultural school
  • 1906–1921: Teachers' seminar
  • 1921: Housekeeping School
  • 1940 reserve hospital
  • 1946–1960: School for rural women
  • 1965: Village community center

Today the castle houses an ornithological museum, the castle chapel of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation and the wedding hall, which is also the meeting room of the Zetel municipal council. The “Kindergarten im Schloss”, one of four kindergartens in Zetel, is also located in the premises.
