The Grand Duchess Elizabeth - originally San Antonio , then Ariadne - is a three-masted gaff schooner with home port Elsfleth at the Unterweser . It is currently the training ship of the Elsfleth Maritime School and named after the Oldenburg Grand Duchess Elisabeth Alexandrine Mathilde von Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1869–1955).

history

In 1907 a three-masted schooner was launched under the name San Antonio for the shipowner Andreas Hammerstein. Already in 1908 the San Antonio sank after a collision with the small cruiser Lübeck of the Imperial Navy . In a maritime court hearing it was found that the Lübeck was to blame for the collision, which is why the Imperial Navy had to pay for a new building for the San Antonio .

On August 19, 1909, the new building was launched in Alblasserdam ( Netherlands ) under the name of San Antonio . The San Antonio was the world's first cargo sailing schooner to be equipped with a diesel engine. The ship had folding masts. In the years 1910–1913 several trips were made to South America and the Mediterranean, among others. On January 25, 1914, the San Antonio ran aground off Rabat , but was released again with the help of the diesel engine. In the winter of 1929 the San Antonio capsized near Copenhagen . It could be salvaged and made afloat again.

The ship last ran under the name Ariadne . It was founded in 1982 by the school ship association “Großherzogin Elisabeth” e. V. bought it and renamed it to its current name - after the former full ship of the German School Ship Association , which was built in 1901.

owner

The training ship association “Grand Duchess Elisabeth” e. V. has been the owner and operator of the sailing training ship since 1982. The purpose of the association is to promote the training of young seafarers . The association has around 700 members, around 100 of whom are active. The ship is used in different ways depending on the season. In spring and autumn it is used by the seafaring department of the Jade University in Elsfleth for training trips with the nautical students . From Easter to October, trips are organized for everyone on the weekends and in the summer holidays. The association finances the sponsorship and training trips from membership fees, income from guest trips and donations.
