St. Gallus Church, Altenesch

The St. Gallus Church in Lemwerder - Altenesch is a single-nave brick church that was consecrated to St. Gallus , a missionary from Ireland.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1299. The oldest part of the church is the nave . The polygonal choir was added later, the wooden tower was built in 1720. The bell dates from 1790.

On the site of the church there was already a previous building that was burned during the Battle of Altenesch in 1234. At a depth of approx. 1.80 meters below the church, the stone foundation of this previous church is still there. It is believed that this is where the victims were buried in a mass grave after the battle .

The church was extensively renovated between 1998 and 2004.

The St. Gallus Church is the larger of two churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Parish Altenesch / Lemwerder. The second building is the chapel on the dike in Lemwerder.

Furnishing

An early Gothic statue of the Virgin of unknown origin probably comes from the previous building. The confessional dates from the 15th century. In the attached choir there is a polygonal wooden canopy from the Renaissance . Ludwig Münstermann created the pulpit in 1619 with depictions of the Gospels and the namesake of the church. A restoration took place in 2004.

The wall paintings from the 16th century depict the Last Judgment and St. Christopher . The altarpiece is made in the classicism style.

organ

Wilhelmi organ from 1795

The organ was built in 1794/95 by the master organ builder Georg Wilhelm Wilhelmy (Stade) and is probably his last instrument preserved in this way. The organ is almost completely preserved. It was last extensively restored in 2007/2008 by Winold van der Putten , whereby two notes were added to the original registers. The instrument has 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal . All works have the short octave , so that the major C sharp is missing in all parts. The Subbass 16 ′ dates from the 19th century. This register was placed behind on a separate drawer.
