The Evangelical Lutheran chapel on the dike is a church building in the municipality of Lemwerder in the Wesermarsch district in Lower Saxony . They include not only the larger St. Gallus church to church Altenesch / Lemwerder in the church district Weser march of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .

Building history

The chapel on the dike is a single-nave early Gothic brick building, which was probably built around 1260. The chapel is the oldest building in Lemwerder. It was built at what was once the highest point in the town. In the oldest part, the walls are 1.15 meters thick. The tower dates from 1652. An earlier stone vault was removed between 1773 and 1797 and replaced by a wooden beam ceiling.

The chapel (or previous building) is said to have been built as the castle chapel of the Counts of Versfleth, according to tradition. The place Versfleth , however, was in the area of ​​today's municipality of Berne . A namesake is not known.

  • Pulpit from 1586 with relief depictions of four virtues: justice, bravery, prudence, hope

  • Grave of Katharina von Ziegler born von Hagemann, died 1697, benefactress of the chapel
  • Organ by Claus Sebastian, Geesthacht; 1 manual, pedal, 8 registers, 1997
  • Steel bell, 1863, Bremen
  • Votive ship: model of the barque "Pauline", with which whalers drove from Lemwerder into the Arctic Ocean. Made by myself and donated by captain a. D. Hans-Nikolaus Schümann 2002.
