Storm surge barrier

A flood barrier , sometimes inaccurate as flood defense called, is a barrage in an estuary , a bay or a channel whose moveable goals only in the event of a storm surge shut off the water from the water influx from the sea. When the water levels are not dangerous, it allows the water currents such as the runoff of the headwater and the tides to pass as freely as possible.

use

This prevents flooding inland and in port areas. The erection of such structures shortens the dike line, which means that additional construction and maintenance measures are no longer necessary. If shipping is to be possible even when the gates are closed, a lock has been created in addition to the closable flow openings.

Storm surge barriers are mainly found in tidal waters where, on the one hand, the tidal influx of water is ecologically important, and on the other hand, threatening situations occur relatively often due to the coincidence of astronomical tides and storm surges. There are also storm surge barriers at river mouths and bays with no significant tidal range .

Demarcation

Storm surge barriers should not be confused with the weir systems that exist at many estuaries further up. They limit the tidal range and thus the estuary . On the one hand, they have the function of a sluice and shield the inland water that follows upstream from the astronomical tides and from storm surges. In addition, they have the function of a barrage as a weir , guaranteeing sufficient water levels and thus the diving depths of the inland waterway . Examples are the Emswehr and Emsschleuse in Herbrum , the Bremen Weser weir , the Geesthacht barrage in the Elbe , as well as the lock and weir system in the north field of the Eider .
