Karlheinz Geils (born May 20, 1955 ) is a former German soccer player .

Athletic career

Club career

With a total of 405 appearances between 1974 and 1989 for the clubs Werder Bremen , Arminia Bielefeld , 1. FC Cologne and Hannover 96 , defender Karlheinz Geils was one of the pillars of Bundesliga operations for many years . Only 56 players had played more games in the German elite class before the 2019/20 season.

He was denied titles. His greatest success was taking part in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup finals with 1. FC Köln. Overall, the Domstadt team lost 3-5 against Real Madrid after both games .

Selection bets

Karlheinz Geils played 22 international matches for various DFB selection teams, but none for the senior national team. As one of the older players who could still be used as support for the young players at the time, he finished second in the young European championships in 1982 with the German U-21 national team .

Coaching career

In the mid-1990s, Geils was the coach of SV Atlas Delmenhorst . In the Regionalliga season 1995/96 he was released after the 27th matchday.

Further career

Today he lives in his hometown Ritterhude , a town in Lower Saxony bordering to the north of Bremen , where he runs a driving school. His wife Susanne was elected mayor of this municipality in 2006.
