Georg Gröning (born August 23, 1745 in Bremen , † August 1, 1825 in Bremen) was a German politician, Bremen councilor , senator and mayor from 1814 to 1821.

Gröning was the son-in-law of the Mayor of Bremen Heinrich Köhne jun. The Bremen Senator and Mayor Albert Gröning (1839–1903) was his grandson. He was with Gebecka Gröning, geb. Köhne (1747–1811) married, the only daughter of the mayor Heinrich Köhne (1721–1792); both had nine children, six of whom survived and married into influential Bremen families. The youngest daughter Anna Gebecka (1786–1860) became known through her travelogues. She married the future mayor Diederich Meier (1787–1857).

Groening studied law and received his doctorate Dr. jur. He worked as a lawyer in Bremen. In 1774, after the death of Friedrich August von der Hude, he acquired the dam in Ritterhude . He became councilor of Bremen in 1781. For the city he was in diplomatic service, then up until 1808 he was often on the road, in particular in France to bring about the enlargement of the national territory and a certain independence of the city. In 1802/03 he was also able to achieve the lifting of the Elsflether Customs after a period of 10 years. At the time of the French occupation he was a member of the Legislative Body ( Parliament ) of France in Paris . After the French period in Bremen , he was mayor of Bremen from 1814 to 1821. In 1821 he had to resign due to illness. His son Heinrich Gröning (1774–1839) took over his office as mayor.

The Landhaus Louisenthal let Groening 1815 build for themselves. Georg-Gröning-Strasse
in Bremen- Schwachhausen is named after him.
