The Hohe Lieth or the Wurster Heide or the Cuxhaven (-Bremerhavener) Geest is a geest running in north-south direction in the Elbe-Weser triangle . It is the geest extending furthest north between the Lower Elbe and the Outer Weser and is now almost entirely in the district of Cuxhaven , the southernmost tip in the north of Bremerhaven .

location

The Geestrücken is the 30 km long and 5 km wide northern part of the Wesermünder Geest , interrupted from southern parts by the Geeste . It towers over the surrounding marshland by 20-25, a maximum of 30 meters. It separates Land Wursten from Land Hadeln and extends from Altenwalde to Lehe (Bremerhaven) . Lehes core is still on the Hohen Lieth, from which Lehes name should be derived. The center of Nordholz lies on the Hohen Lieth. To the east of the terminal moraine are the Hadelner Moors . The highest point of the Hohen Lieth, the Holter Höhe near Altenwalde , is 30 m above sea level .

The Geestrücken emerged as a moraine 100,000 years ago in the Saale Glaciation . Liet (h) is the old Low German word for slope. It often occurs in place names, field names and family names (e.g. "von der Lieth"). The Geestrücke is surrounded by marshland , which is less than 5 m above mean sea level . To the west of the Hohen Lieth lies the land of Wursten, to the north the land of Hadeln, to the east the lowlands of the Geeste and Oste rivers with a few moors. From Berensch to Duhnen it borders directly on the North Sea and is so high there that no dike is necessary. The Wernerwald there is one of only three forests on the German North Sea coast ( Sankt Peter-Ording , Dangast ).

The forest cover of Wurster Heide is between 30 and 40%. There is hardly any heathland any more. The settlement areas of Langen , Midlum , Nordholz and suburbs of Cuxhaven are located on the Geestrücke . The Wanhödener Berg lies 500 m west of Wanhöden . The rest is farmland.

Names

The name Hohe Lieth appears in some maps for the entire mountain range, as well as the name of a single 31 m high elevation between the Wursterheide district and the Franzenburg district of Cuxhaven .

Wurster Heide (1906)

The name Wurster Heide also appears in some maps, such as the one on the left, for the entire ridge, but also for parts of the ridge, here the area east of Nordholz, which also includes today's district of the same name and the Nordholz air base . The Wurster farmers lacked wood, sand and pest . There was no such thing in the country of Wursten; Trees have only been growing there since the 19th century. The heath got its name when the Wurster “acquired” this area.

The names Cuxhaven-Bremerhavener Geest or Cuxhavener Geest , on the other hand, are more in use in a scientific context.
