history

Great stone grave Wanhöden

Prehistoric times and first mention

The first settlement of the area, due to the large number of prehistoric tombs, suggests the Bronze Age 3000 years ago. The nearby Hohensteine near Wanhöden, the large stone grave Wanhöden (giant hut) and the large stone grave Henkenstein are megalithic systems .

The place Wanhöden is mentioned for the first time in 1509 in the nearby Neuenwalde monastery . In a document from the register of goods there, the place is still called Wanhoyen or Wanhoyge.

school

Around the year 1875, the Wanhödener were busy building a school. Until then, the children were not taught at all or only in the winter months, despite the compulsory education in the duchies of Bremen and Verden in 1752. The corresponding one-class lessons took place alternately in the living rooms of the local farmers. There were no permanent teachers at the time. A well-read school assistant was sought for the number of pupils at the time and paid accordingly. He also received accommodation and free board alternately with the parents of the pupils. Since, like all other teachers, he received less than ten Reichsthaler a year as wages, he mostly had to earn additional income as a day laborer , Holland worker or as a clerk . A preacher from Altenwalde supervised him and tested his skills before hiring. A superintendent from Dorum who was in charge of him received information and reports on the service administration and the way of life of the corresponding Wanhöden teacher.

A separate village school was only built in 1883. A residential wing for the teacher was added to the school nine years later. Both buildings got electric light in 1930 and running water in 1960. In the 100-year history of the school, the number of pupils was mostly between 15 and 30. After the Second World War, due to the high number of refugees and evacuees, a high of 60 students had been reached. According to the chronicle, the Wanhöden teachers have often changed, as a total of 21 teachers have been recorded.

The village school was closed in 1968. The school building was converted into a single-family house and is still inhabited today.

500th birthday

In 2009 a big celebration took place for the 500th birthday of the village, for which a 240-page commemorative publication / chronicle was published.

Wanhöden coat of arms
Blazon : " Split - forward in silver over a black ernie derten line beams a red fox head ; at the backa stylized silver birch with rootsin green . "
