coat of arms

The design of the municipal coat of arms of Midlum comes from the heraldist and coat of arms painter Albert de Badrihaye , who designed around 80 coats of arms in the district of Cuxhaven.

Midlum coat of arms
Blazon : "In green above a silver, erect bishop's staff, accompaniedby two golden ears of corn ,a golden scale ."
Justification of the coat of arms: The bishop's staff as a symbol of ecclesiastical rule reminds us that in the Middle Ages the manorial rule in Midlum largely belonged to the monastery founded there in 1219, moved to Altenwalde in 1282 and moved to Neuenwalde in 1334 . The scales indicate the importance of Midlums as a market place and the ears of wheat are symbols of agriculture.

Buildings

church

The church in Midlum, consecrated to St. Pancras , dates partly from the middle of the 12th century, partly from the beginning of the 13th century and is made of field stones. During the Gothic period , several windows were renewed with brick. Valuable pieces of equipment include the leaded baptismal font from the 14th century, an epitaph from 1611, the stalls with relief panels from 1622, the pulpit from 1623 and the altar from 1696.

Windmill

The Midlumer Mühle, a so-called Galerie-Holländer , is one of the few still functional windmills of this type in the district of Cuxhaven. It was built in 1857. The last active miller operated the mill with wind power until 1955. However, milling became increasingly unprofitable and soon could no longer hold its own against modern industrial mills. In 1998 the mill was sold to the community. Thanks to generous subsidies, this enabled it to be completely renovated. Today it is a listed building. To maintain and operate the mill and its bakery, a mill association was founded in 1998, namely the "Association for the Preservation of the Midlumer Mühle". The mill association operates and maintains the mill on its own. Weddings are also possible, because the mill is the official branch of the registry office of the municipality of Wurster North Sea Coast .
