history
The Franconian- Carolingian Altenwalder Castle was built around 797 on the raised area above an Old Saxon burial ground from the 3rd to the 8th century.
In 1590, Duke Franz II of Lauenburg (1581–1619) built a castle with a rectangular rampart south of Altenwalde . Their remains can still be seen today. The castle was in 1632 by imperial troops occupied and after only 50 years in the course of the Thirty Years' War destroyed . It is the origin of today's Franzenburg district. The 357-hectare Franzenburg domain was built as the fortress in 1591/1593. The gatehouse was built in 1786 and is shown in the coat of arms.
On July 1, 1972, the district together with Altenwalde was umgemeindet to Cuxhaven.

Blazon : "In gold on green ground, a red gate building with a red tower , black gate, roof and tower roof." | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: The coat of arms represents the entrance to the Franzenburg domain. It is the only building of the castle complex "Franzenburg" built by the Saxon-Lauenburg Duke Franz II, who gave the place its name, that has been preserved to the present day. |
