Gatehouse

The Franzenburg domain in Cuxhaven - Franzenburg , Lüdingworther Straße 135, is under the protection of historical monuments in Lower Saxony and is included in the list of architectural monuments in the outer districts of the city of Cuxhaven .

history

Duke Franz II. Von Sachsen-Lauenburg (1581-1619) had a fortress built from 1590, which got his name. The 100 m x 100 m ramparts surrounded the 60 m x 60 m fortress. In 1644 the system was razed on behalf of Duke August .

The domain belonged as Vorwerk fortress. Duke Franz II acquired four farms with a size of 357 hectares as pasture, arable land and moorland in the Lüdingworther Westerende in 1591/1593 through purchase and exchange.

Coat of arms with the gatehouse

After 1644 the land was leased.
The brick gatehouse from 1786 with the coat of arms of Franzenburg and an octagonal roof turret was built by the leaseholder Peter Bohln from the remains of the Franzenburg. Today the courtyard café Zum Alten Torhaus is located in the renovated gatehouse .

Since 1866 the court was a Prussian state domain, which was leased from the province of Hanover from 1877 onwards . Around 1893 the stable and barn building from 1870 burned down and a new building was built. In 1939, after giving up the lease, the Stader Domain Office sold the 175 hectare farm to the Hannoversche Siedlungsgesellschaft. After 1949 the farm was sold to four owners.
