Harris pre-mashing device

In the Harris apparatus, the malt falls through the funnel A by means of the slide F into the cylinder D and from there through a passage provided with openings of different widths onto a cone H, which forms the outermost outlet of a cylinder vessel, which is again in a separate Cylinder rests.

The water flow, which has been brought to the desired temperature, penetrates through the pipes BB, which are provided with taps, to chambers JJ and K, passes through the perforated side walls in fine jets into room LL and here comes into contact with the malt distributed by cone H.

Another pre-mashing apparatus consists of an iron lying cylinder a, which is fed through the channel b and contains a shaft c fitted with arms, which is set in rotation by the gear wheel d and causes an intimate mixture of malt and water. The mash flows into the mash tun, which is now mostly made of iron, and is further mixed with water here with the help of the stirring log or special mashing machines.

A simple mashing machine for smaller breweries consists of a vertical shaft a in the middle of the mash tun carries the two inclined wings bb at the bottom, which prevent the heavy parts of the mash from accumulating in the middle of the vat and set the mash in rotation. The rotating mash must, however, constantly pass the rods cc and is thus maintained in an even mixture. The drive of the shaft a is carried out by the gears de and the pulley f.
