Maeve Binchy (born May 28, 1939 in Dalkey in what is now County Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown , † July 30, 2012 in Dublin ) was an Irish writer and columnist for the newspaper " The Irish Times ".

Life

Binchy studied at University College Dublin and then worked as a teacher before eventually becoming a columnist for the Irish Times and later a writer.

Often set in Ireland, her novels portray the tensions between urban and rural life, the contrasts between England and Ireland, and the dramatic changes her homeland has undergone since World War II .

Binchy is one of the best-selling authors in the UK and USA . Her books have sold over 40 million copies so far.

Binchy lived for a long time with her husband, children's author Gordon Snell, in Dublin and London , but then returned to Dalkey.

In recognition of her life's work, Binchy was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Award 2010 ; she received another Irish Book Award posthumously in 2012 for A Week in Winter .

Maeve Binchy died on July 30, 2012 after a brief illness at the age of 72 in Dublin.
