The Lower Saxony estuary of the Elbe is a nature reserve in the municipality and district-free area of ​​the Lower Elbe .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 336 is approximately 8455  hectares . It is completely part of the FFH area “Lower Elbe” and partly part of the EU bird protection area “Lower Elbe”. It borders to the south on the nature reserves " Hadelner and Belumer Außenendeich ", " Vogelschutzgebiet Hullen ", " Außenendeich Nordkehdingen I" and "Außenendeich Nordkehdingen II " and to the northwest on the national parks of Lower Saxony Wadden Sea and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea . Parts of the nature reserves "Vogelschutzgebiet Hullen", "Außenendeich Nordkehdingen I" and "Außenendeich Nordkehdingen II" have merged into the nature reserve "Lower Saxon Muzzle of the Elbe". The area has been under nature protection since November 22, 2018. The responsible nature conservation authority is the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation .

The nature reserve includes tidal flats and water areas of the Elbe and extends along the Elbe north of Freiburg / Elbe to Cuxhaven - Döse ( near Kugelbake ). It covers the areas of the middle tide high water line on the left bank of the Elbe to the border with Schleswig-Holstein in the eastern area of the nature reserve and follows the Neufeld sand in the western area of the nature reserve in about the course of the river south of the on the right side of Elbe areas that dry out at low tide . In Cuxhaven, the areas of the Elbe in front of the port facilities and beach areas are excluded from the scope of the Nature Conservation Ordinance.

The nature reserve, which is subject to the influence of the tides, with extensive tidal flats, creeks and open water areas of the Elbe with deep and shallow water zones, is the habitat of a species-rich flora and fauna.
