The Balje lighthouse is a former beacon and cross- mark beacon on the Lower Saxony bank of the Lower Elbe .
history
The opening of the Kiel Canal at the beginning of the 1900s required the construction of additional beacons in the area of the Lower Elbe . In this context, the Balje lighthouse was built in 1903. It stands in the extended axis of the Brunsbüttel lock and went into operation on February 1, 1904 as a guide and cross-mark beacon.
The manned beacon was initially operated with petroleum and converted to liquid gas in 1927 . The electrification took place in 1962, at the same time the beacon keepers were withdrawn and remote monitoring was set up. In December 1974, the administrative district of Stade declared the landscape around the tower to be a nature reserve "Außenendeich Nordkehdingen I" .
After the new leading light line Balje went into operation , the old beacon was extinguished on December 15, 1980. The building was then acquired by the Stade district and placed under monument protection. However, the subsequent use as an ornithological station failed due to lack of money and a lack of usage concept. Eventually the tower was left to decay.
The Friends of Baljer Lighthouse v. 1904 eV achieved that the tower could be preserved. The necessary renovations were completed in 2010. The tower has been open to visitors in July and August since 2012.
