The bird sanctuary Hullen is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Balje in the combined municipality of Nordkehdingen in the district of Stade and in the Elbe and Oste .
The former nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 055 is 489 hectares in size. Of this, 385 hectares are accounted for by mudflats and water areas of the Elbe and Oste, for which the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Protection was responsible, and 104 hectares in the Stade district. The former nature reserve is largely part of the FFH area “Lower Elbe” and the EU bird protection area “Lower Elbe”. In the east the nature reserve bordered directly on the former nature reserve " Außenendeich Nordkehdingen I ", in the south on the " Wild bird reserve Nordkehdingen ". On the other side of the Oste, the nature reserve " Hadelner und Belumer Außenendeich " is connected. The area has been under nature protection since August 16, 1970. In December 2018, the area was incorporated into the newly designated " Elbe and Islands " nature reserve . The responsible lower nature conservation authorities were the district of Stade and the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation.
The former nature reserve lies outside the Elbe dike and includes the outer dike areas as well as the upstream mudflats and water areas with the Osteriff. The north and west borders are the mean low tide line, to the south the foot of the dike formed the border of the nature reserve.
The "Hullen Bird Sanctuary" is located in brackish water and is characterized by tidal reeds , salt marshes and floodplain . It is of great importance as a breeding area for bird species living here and as a resting area for migratory birds .
