The Lotus 109 was a Formula 1 racing car from the British racing team Lotus , which was used in the 1994 Formula 1 season .
Technical specifications
Externally, the Lotus 109 looked like a modified Lotus 107B , but its basic design was significantly changed. The monocoque was made of synthetic resin reinforced with carbon fibers and baked in one piece. It was significantly shorter and narrower than that of its predecessor. The cockpit opening, however, was wider. In total, only three chassis were built due to lack of money. With new cooler elements, the side boxes could be made smaller and higher. A striking feature of the Lotus 109 was a strongly flattened vehicle nose.
The Lotus 109 was powered by a Honda 2A-5C from Mugen-Honda . The V-10 engine had a displacement of 3498 cc and, in its final stage of development from the Italian Grand Prix, made around 760 hp (560 kW) at a speed of around 14,600 rpm. The engine electronics and ignition system were from Honda. The semi-automatic transmission developed by Lotus and Xtrac had six forward gears and one reverse gear. The braking system came from AP. The tank volume was 210 liters. In addition, the car had a traction control system . The wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones . Springs and shock absorbers were on the inside and operated via push rods. The car had a wheelbase of 2950 mm and a track width of 1650 mm at the front and 1600 mm at the rear.
sponsor
The team's main sponsors were the US brewery Miller , the fashion company Tomy Hilfiger and the Japanese electronics and mechanical engineering group Hitachi . Other advertising media included the construction machinery manufacturer Komatsu , the adhesive manufacturer Loctite and the pharmaceutical company Shionogi .
Season course
The upswing hoped for by Lotus through the change of the engine partner did not materialize. The Mugen unit proved to be quite reliable and powerful, but the regular drivers Alessandro Zanardi and Johnny Herbert were unable to achieve any results worth mentioning. A further complicating factor for Lotus was that the team was increasingly dependent on Paydriver from the second half of the season in order to be able to compete in world championship races at all. Therefore, the vehicle could no longer be further developed. In the fall of 1994, Lotus finally filed for bankruptcy to prevent a sell-off.
