The 1988 Formula 1 World Championship was the 39th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races between April 3rd and November 13th. Ayrton Senna won the drivers' championship for the first time. McLaren became world constructors champions for the fourth time.
The combination of Senna, Prost and McLaren-Honda was almost unbeatable; McLaren-Honda won 15 of the 16 races; at the race in Monza a certain victory was only prevented by failure or accident of the two McLaren.
Changes in 1988
Regulations
The last year of the “turbo era”, the end of which was announced by the FIA in October 1986, brought further restrictions for the powerful but expensive engines: the boost pressure was limited to a maximum of 2.5 bar and the amount of fuel for this type of engine to just 150 liters. In addition, the minimum vehicle weight has been increased to 540 kg.
Racetracks
The Austrian Grand Prix dropped off the racing calendar, whereas the Canadian Grand Prix returned there after a one-year break. In addition, the sequence of the races was changed: the Mexican Grand Prix , which had taken place in autumn since its reintroduction in 1986, was moved to early summer so that all three races in North America could now take place one after the other. The Belgian Grand Prix has also been moved from spring to late summer, as has the Spanish Grand Prix to autumn.
Teams
The teams Rial , BMS Scuderia Italia and EuroBrun were new to the field . On the other hand, Brabham disappeared from the registration lists , because after the withdrawal of the engine supplier BMW no competitive engines could be procured and team owner Bernie Ecclestone was too tense due to his role at the top of the FOCA .
Engines
With a view to the impending ban on turbo engines in 1989, several teams decided ahead of time to switch to naturally aspirated engines. These included Williams , who installed a Judd engine, and Benetton , who received the new DFR engine exclusively from its engine partner Ford . Ligier also switched to naturally aspirated Judd engines , while Minardi used a Ford engine.
McLaren , which also switched from TAG-Porsche to Honda engines, continued to rely on turbo engines, Lotus (also Honda), Arrows ( Megatron ), Ferrari , Osella and Zakspeed (each of their own designs). The smaller teams Tyrrell , AGS , March , Larrousse and Coloni , on the other hand, had all driven with naturally aspirated engines as early as 1987, with March switching from Ford to Judd engines. The newly registered Rial, BMS Scuderia Italia and EuroBrun also competed with Ford engines.
driver
Nelson Piquet , last year's world champion, switched from Williams to Lotus, whose top driver Ayrton Senna had switched to McLaren. Senna ousted Stefan Johansson to Ligier, whose second driver Piercarlo Ghinzani went to Zakspeed, where he relegated Christian Danner to the role of test and substitute driver. Williams signed Riccardo Patrese as the second driver alongside Nigel Mansell, a driver who had previously driven for Brabham. The other former Brabham driver Andrea de Cesaris brought his routine with him to Rial.
Alessandro Nannini moved from Minardi to Benetton . Since Luis Pérez-Sala succeeded him at Minardi and competed alongside Adrián Campos , the Italian racing team started with a completely Spanish driver pairing.
The driver constellation remained unchanged only with Ferrari, Arrows and Larrousse. However, from this season March took part in the races with two vehicles each, so that Ivan Capelli , who had previously driven alone , formed a driver duo with the Brazilian Maurício Gugelmin , who stayed together until 1991.
