Overtake button

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The overtaking button is a mechanism for a racing car that gives the driver the opportunity to briefly increase the performance data. Usually the button is on the steering wheel. The system was developed to make overtaking easier and thus to make motorsport more exciting.

Several racing series use an overtake button, including the Formula 1 , Champ Car , A1GP and the IndyCar Series .

It is not necessary that the system be used only when a driver is trying to overtake another car. For example, a driver can use the button to defend his position. The amount of additional power, the length of time it is applied and the number of uses during the race depends on the particular racing series .

In Formula 1, the KERS system worked in a similar way. The Drag Reduction System , DRS for short, on the other hand, increases acceleration and top speed by opening part of the rear wing .
