Canada Command (CANCOM) (French Commandement Canada) was one of the four high command of the Canadian armed forces . Canada Command was responsible for the security of Canada through routine tasks as well as special operations that serve the national security. The individual tasks included: search and rescue coordination, airspace surveillance, coordination of national security and contingent planning. Canada Command used the capacities of the Royal Canadian Navy , Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force . In 2012, its tasks were largely transferred to the Canadian Joint Operations Command .

history

Canada Command was established on February 1, 2006, due to the restructuring of the Canadian armed forces . Before that there was no central coordination point for the three branches of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The North American ice storm in 1998 and the attacks of September 11, 2001 demonstrated the need to increase the efficiency of the armed forces and the need to increase cooperation with civil security and rescue units and with the United States . Since it was set up, Canada Command has had several humanitarian missions in Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.

Tasks and organization

Canada Command's primary role was to protect the country from potential threats. The Canada Command thus ensured that the armed forces were ready for action quickly, taking into account the existing capacities. Canada Command continued to share resources with the Canadian Operational Support Command , Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, and the Canadian Expeditionary Force Command . In addition, the Canada Command had a quick connection to other government agencies and security forces such as u. a. of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) . Furthermore, the Canada Command worked very closely with the United States Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command .

The command was divided into ten sub-organizations. These include six Joint Task Forces (JTFs) , three Search and Rescue Regions (SRRs) , and a Canadian Forces Air Component Commander (CFACC) , who is responsible for the division of the flying units and plans the resources for the (JTFs). Canada Command reports to the Chief of the Defense Staff and is led by Lieutenant-General Walter Semianiw .

tasks

In the event of natural disasters or security hazards, the local security forces such as the local police or, if necessary, the Canadian Federal Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), as well as the local governments and provincial governments are responsible. However, provincial governments may seek help from the federal government to restore security. However, the provincial governments must send a request to the Minister of Public Safety . Only then can Canada Command send military personnel into the areas to support local security and rescue forces. Canada Command is also used at large, long-term events where there is a risk of attack or civil unrest. Canada Command was responsible for security during the 2010 Winter Olympics , G8 Huntsville 2010 and G20 Toronto 2010 Summit .

For routine tasks, Canada Command coordinates the operations of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police , Fisheries and Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard , which patrols the coast of Canada to prevent drug smuggling and illegal immigration.
