CFB Halifax
Canadian Forces Base Halifax (CFB Halifax) is Canada's most easterly naval base of the Canadian Navy and the main stationing base of the Atlantic fleet (also Maritime Forces Atlantic). It is the largest military base near Halifax in Nova Scotia . Other smaller military bases are in the Halifax Harbor area . CFB Halifax is the oldest naval base in Canada. It was built in the 18th century as a dockyard for the Royal Navy and later by Canada a. a. used as Her Majesty's Canadian Dockyard .
Military facilities
CFAD Bedford is a large munitions depot and supply depot located near the Navy Base in Halifax. The CFS St. John's is a small base in St. John's in the province of Newfoundland . The NRS Newport Corner in Brooklyn, Hants County, Nova Scotia is a major radio transmitter for the entire Atlantic fleet of the Canadian Navy . Another transmitter is the NRS Mill Cove about 50 km west of Halifax. These two transmitters are remote-controlled from the CFB Halifax base. The Shearwater Heliport is almost in the immediate vicinity . It was previously used as a Canadian Air Force Base, but is now a helicopter airfield for CFB Halifax and rescue helicopters. Today the headquarters of the 12th Wing is stationed at the heliport . Stadacona is home to the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School , the Canadian Forces Naval Operations School , the Air Base Hospital , the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Center and several churches. Stadacona is also home to the Maritime Command Museum .
Housing estates
Residences for stationed personnel are located at Windsor Park. The Department of National Defense (DND) built the housing estate in western Halifax. Barracks in Stadacona with smaller apartments are mostly inhabited by young unmarried marines. Another housing estate is at the Shearwater Heliport .
CFB Shearwater
CFB Halifax has its own military airfield, CFB Shearwater . The 12th Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force with several CH-124 SeaKing helicopters is stationed at the airfield. The 12th Wing operates air connections for the Navy. The airfield is located directly on the bank in close proximity to the Navy base.
Joint Rescue Coordination Center Halifax
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center Halifax (JRCC Halifax ) is located on the base . The JRCC is a rescue coordination center operated jointly by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). The coordination center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, accepts emergency calls and coordinates the emergency services.
