CFB Esquimalt
Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt (CFB Esquimalt) is a naval base of the Canadian Navy on the west coast in Esquimalt , Vancouver Island , Canada . The base serves as the headquarters of the Maritime Forces Pacific and as the headquarters of the Joint Task Force of the Canadian Navy. The base covers an area of around 41 square kilometers and is located on the southern part of Vancouver Island on Juan de Fuca Strait .
Parts of the site ( Her Majesty's Canadian Dockyard , the former Royal Navy Hospital , the Veterans Cemetery and the Cole Island Magazine ) were declared a National Historic Site of Canada by the Canadian government on November 24, 1995 .
Military facilities
The headquarters are in the Naden harbor area and the Esquimalt Dockyard . The Canadian Navy Headquarters Pacific is located on the premises of Dockyard Esquimalt and Drydock. There is also an education and training center for rescue workers and the Naval Officer Training Center (NOTC Venture) and a Navy hospital on the premises.
CFB Esquimalt has several military areas around the main base. The Fleet Maintenance Facility is located in Cape Breton. Other military facilities include the Albert Head training area near Albert Head, Metchosin, approx. 30 km southwest of Victoria. Which has an area of around 88 hectares. The Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental Test Range near Nanoose Bay is also part of the CFB Esquimalt military base. New technologies for sonarboys, torpedoes and other technologies are researched, developed and tested at the site. CFB Esquimalt has a ferry taxi to connect the individual bases with each other, as well as a bus network outside / inside the military facilities. The Naval Radio Station Aldergrove in Fraser Valley is a radio transmitter for long-range communications and is used by the Maritime Forces Pacific .
There are also several housing estates for the stationed soldiers in the immediate vicinity in Belmont Park, Work Point and Royal Roads.
fleet
The following destroyers, frigates, supply ships and submarines are stationed at the base:
- 5 frigates of the Halifax-class frigate
- 1 destroyer of the Iroquois-class destroyer
- One supply ship of the Protecteur class
- 6 Kingston-class Coastal Defense Vessels
- 1 submarine of the Victoria-class
There are also other training and support ships. Among other things, the HMCS Oriole , the sail training ship of the Canadian Navy.
