The Kingston-class consists of twelve ship units and is operated by the Royal Canadian Navy . The ships were built and delivered in the mid to late 1990s. The crews of the ships consist of reservists. Primary duties include rescuing shipwrecked people on the Canadian coast, monitoring and protecting Canadian coasts from terrorism, illegal immigration, drug importation and training. Furthermore, these boats are also designed for mine clearing . The boats are stationed on the west coast of Canada in British Columbia at the Navy base CFB Esquimalt , and on the east coast in Nova Scotia at the Navy base CFB Halifax . The ships operate primarily in Canadian territorial waters .
construction
The aim was to develop ships that are suitable for civil and military tasks. The Kingston class has plenty of space and comfort for the crew. The Schottel rudder propellers give the ships good maneuverability. The powerful drive units are characterized by their fuel-saving consumption. The hull is supported by a longitudinal frame and has grooves to reduce the weight of the steel.
