Celso Emilio Ferreiro Míguez (born January 6, 1912 in Celanova , † August 31, 1979 in Vigo ) was a Spanish writer and journalist who wrote in Galician .

Life

Ferreiro attended a pupil of Padres Escolapios . He joined the Galician nationalist movement at an early stage and founded the Mocedades Galeguistas de Celanova in 1932 with Xosé Velo Mosquera . In 1934 he took part in the founding of the Federación de Mocedades Galeguistas . The following year he made his debut as a writer with the poetry book Cartafol de poesía . During the Spanish Civil War he was drafted into the Frankist troops.

After the civil war he studied law in Santiago de Compostela. He wrote for various newspapers and magazines. In 1940 he settled in Pontevedra and married Luisa Moraima Loredo there , with whom he had four children. From 1950 he lived as a lawyer in Vigo. During this time he published in the Papeles de Sor Armadans and Alvaro Cunqueiros Faro de Vigo , directed by Camilo José Cela .

With the volume of poetry Longa noite de pedra (1962) Ferreiro established himself as the heir of the poet Manuel Curros Enríquez . In 1963 he founded the Unión do Povo Galego with Xosé Luis Méndez-Ferrín and other Galician intellectuals . In 1966 he emigrated to Venezuela, where he headed the Hermandad Galega cultural center , the Irmandade magazine and Escola Castelao, and supervised a radio program. From 1973 Ferreiro lived in Madrid, where he directed the Aula de Literatura Galega at the Ateneo de Madrid .
