Ramón Cabanillas

Ramón Cabanillas Enríquez (born June 3, 1876 in Cambados , † November 9, 1959 ibid) was a Spanish writer who wrote in the Galician language .

Cabanillas attended the Seminario de San Martiño Pinario from 1889 to 1893 . However, he gave up the priestly career and worked for ten years in his hometown in a notary's office and later in the local government before moving to Cuba in 1910. He worked as administrative director of the Teatro Nacional in Havana and edited El centro , the bulletin of the Centro Gallego . His first poems appeared in the Suevia magazine . In 1912 he returned to his hometown for a short time, took part in a rally of the Acción Gallega and became a sympathizer of the agrarian movement Basilio Álvarez '.

In 1913 his first novel No desterro was published in Cuba . After two years, Cabanillas returned to Spain again. From 1916 to 1924 he was secretary of the local council of Mos and ran for the Constituent Assembly in 1931. Before the Spanish Civil War he was a member of the nationalist Galician organization Irmandades da Fala and a symbol of the Galician national movement. At the Real Academia Galega he gave a lecture in 1920 under the title A saudade nos poetas galegos , at the Real Academia Española in Madrid in 1929 together with Cotarelo Valledor a lecture on the life and work of Eduardo Pondal .

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War surprised Cabanillas in Madrid. Via Valencia, where he met Castelao , he returned to his hometown and in the following years worked as secretary of various Galician communities. In addition to several volumes of poetry, Cabanillas wrote several dramas, including the historical verse drama O mariscal (1926) about Pero Pardo de Cela .

As an author standing between Resurximento (the movement to revive the Galician cultural tradition) and modernity, between Catholic late romanticism, symbolism and post- symbolism , he is counted among the Xeración Antre Dous Séculos ( generación entre dos siglos ), i.e. the "generation between two centuries".
