Ramón Otero Pedrayo (born March 5, 1888 in Ourense , † April 10, 1976 ibid) was a Spanish writer who wrote in the Galician language .

Life

Otero studied law, philosophy and literature in Madrid and Santiago de Compostela. On his return to Ourense he worked for the magazine La Centuria and, alongside Vicente Risco , Florentino Cuevillas and Primitivo Rodríguez Sanjurjo, was one of a group of young writers who, under the influence of Antón Losada Diéguez , joined the Galician national movement. He taught history geography and history at the Seminario de Estudos Galegos and made his debut as a writer in 1925 with a collection of short stories called Pantelas, home libre .

Other prose works followed, including Camiños da vida (1928) and the autobiographical novel Arredor de sí (1930). In addition, Otero was still politically active: he was active as a speaker, was a co-founder of the Partido Galeguista and was elected to the constituent assembly in 1931. He campaigned for the Popular Frente in 1936 and retired to his family's property in Trasalba during the Spanish Civil War.

In 1950 Otero received a chair in geography and history at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela . He took part in the founding of the Galaxia editorial , wrote for its collection Entre a vendima ea castiñeira and contributed to the magazine Grial . Otero left an extensive narrative work, but also emerged as a poet, was a well-known essayist and was considered an important representative of the Galician resistance during the Franco dictatorship. When he died at the age of eighty-eight in 1976, he was the patriarch of Galician literature. In addition to Risco, Afonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao and Losada Diéguez , Otero is part of the Grupo Nos .
