The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command ( CANSOFCOM ; French: Commandement des Forces d'opérations spéciales du Canada - COMFOSCAN ) is a cross- armed forces command that leads all special units of the Canadian military .
The current commander of CANSOFCOM has been Major-General Peter Dawe since 2018 . He replaced Major-General Michael Rouleau , who had been in command since 2014.
assignment
In addition to the operational management of special forces, the CANSOFCOM is also responsible for developing training guidelines, deployment doctrines and procurement plans for these units. It ensures the coordination of the individual special operations units, their training and provision and advises the Canadian General Staff on issues of special operation management and planning.
The CANSOFCOM is able to plan and conduct operations as an independent command, but also to support the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) with all the resources available to it.
organization
The CANSOFCOM consists of the following units:
- Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2), a counter-terrorism and hostage rescue unit , Dwyer Hill Training Center, south of Ottawa, in relocation to CFB Trenton
- 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron (427 SOAS), CFB Petawawa
- Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU), CFB Kingston and CFB Trenton
- Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), CFB Petawawa
equipment
All members of the CANSOFCOM wear a brown beret regardless of their original armed forces or their area of operation, with the respective badge of their weapon branch (or unit).
Demarcation
Although the elite soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces go through a rigorous selection process, not all special uses are subsumed under the term Special Forces . For example, there is special training for snipers , paratroopers and scouts (trackers) in the army and combat divers in the navy, which are not considered special forces in Canada , but have above-average training. The difference between SF / Special Forces and SOF / Special Operation Forces is handled like in most armies in the world. But as the abbreviation already indicates, the CANSOFCOM is a separate armed force that does not include all Specialized Troops (SF).
