Canadian Forces Base Petawawa , (also: Garrison Petawawa or CFB Petawawa, short: "Pet"), is a military base of the Canadian armed forces near Petawawa . The base is operated by the army .

history

The base was built in 1905 as the Petawawa Military Camp (Camp Petawawa for short) by the then predecessor organization, Department of Militia and Defense (DMD) , which is now the Department of National Defense (DND). In addition, the DMD bought a total of 90.8 km² of arable land from the local farmers. The base got its name from the Petawawa River that runs in the area.

During the Second World War , there were three training facilities on the base. These included two artillery and one engineering training center. In September 1942, around 12,515 soldiers were stationed at the base.

By merging the armed forces of the Army, Air Force and Navy, the base was renamed on February 1, 1968 in CFB Petawawa.

The Special Service Force was restructured on April 24, 1995 into the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group .

The headquarters of the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters & Signal Squadron and its subordinate units are located on the base . The soldiers stationed at the base have been involved in some military operations, such as in Afghanistan and Bosnia.

As of 2013, the armed forces have received 15 new CH-147F Chinook crew and transport helicopters . These are operated in Petawawa by the 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, which is subordinate to the 1st Wing in Kingston .
