Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg), (IATA: YWG, ICAO: CYWG), is a Canadian airport base located near Winnipeg , Manitoba , Canada . The base is located in the military area of the civil James Armstrong Richardson International Airport . Several flight support units and training facilities are located at CFB Winnipeg. The main squadron, however, is the 17th Wing Winnipeg, of the Royal Canadian Air Force . 3,600 military and approx. 700 civilian personnel are employed at the base.
One of the buildings on the base is the Billy Bishop Building , which houses the headquarters of the 1st Canadian Air Division (1CAD) and the headquarters of the Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) .
history
Construction work on the base was initiated by the Federal Government's Canadian Air Board in 1922. The construction of the base took three years and was opened in 1925. The base was immediately named by the newly established Royal Canadian Air Force at RCAF Station Winnipeg.
Initially, the base served as winter quarters for the units that were stationed in Manitoba. During the Second World War , the base served as an important education and training center under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) . During that time, over 130,000 soldiers were trained in various areas of responsibility. These included pilots, navigators and radio operators. The base also served as an important machine repair center.
After the war, the base continued to serve as a training and education center for allies. After the military restructuring of the armed forces , the base was renamed CFB Winnipeg in 1968.
