Maimunah Mohd Sharif (born August 26, 1961 in Kuala Pilah, Malaysia ) is a Malaysian urban planner and since 2018 Executive Director of the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT).

Youth and education

Maimunah Mohd Sharif was born in 1961 in the Kuala Pilah district of the Negeri Sembilan province of Malaysia . She studied at the Institutes of Science and Technology at the University of Wales and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in urban planning . She then studied urban planning at the Malaysia University of Science and Technology and obtained a Master of Science degree .

Employment

From 1985 Sharif worked as a city planner for the Penang Island City Council . In 2003 she was appointed director for planning and development and held this position until 2009. Her responsibilities included both urban projects and the development of the surrounding countryside. She led a team for urban renewal projects in the state capital, George Town . In 2009 she became the first general manager of the George Town World Heritage Incorporated , which was founded in July 2008 after George Town was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

In 2011 she was appointed president of the Seberang Perai city council and later mayor. She held this position until 2017. She guided the city council with the vision of a cleaner, greener, safer and healthier place to work, live, invest and play ( cleaner, greener, safer and healthier place to work, live, invest and play ). She emphasized the importance of gender-equitable sharing of responsibility in the economic and administrative areas. Under her leadership, the municipality of Seberang Perai was the first municipality to introduce ISO quality management and to be certified in six areas.

Work at UN-Habitat

On December 22, 2017, Sharif was elected Executive Director of the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT) as the successor of the Spaniard Joan Clos , following nomination by the UN Secretary General by the UN General Assembly.

Other fields of activity

Maimunah Mohd Sharif is a member of the International Gender Champions (IGC) network, which advocates gender equality in international organizations.

Awards

  • 2014 Planner of The Year by the Malaysian Institute of Planners
  • 2016 Global Human Settlements Outstanding Contribution Award during Habitat III in Quito for their urban planning work in Seberang Perai
  • 2018 Recognition award by the Malaysia Book of Records
